Gary Neville: What David De Gea needs at Man United
Man United legend Gary Neville urges the club's players, staff and fans to get behind David De Gea
Gary Neville says David De Gea needs the support of Manchester United’s players, staff and supporters to get through a tough spell in his Old Trafford career.
The Spain international made a sloppy mistake in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Chelsea FC at Old Trafford on Sunday evening to cost the home side two points.
Juan Mata broke the deadlock in the 11th minute with a precise finish from close range after good work from Romelu Lukaku and Luke Shaw.
However, De Gea inadvertently gave Chelsea FC a route back into the Premier League clash when the Spanish goalkeeper made an error in the final minutes of the first half.
The Manchester United number one couldn’t hold on to Antonio Rudiger’s long-range attempt and Marcos Alonso pounced on the rebound to finish from a tight angle.
De Gea has made mistakes in the club’s recent losses to FC Barcelona and Manchester City to raise questions about his form.
The 28-year-old has been the subject of transfer speculation amid reported interest from La Liga giants Real Madrid.
According to recent reports, De Gea has refused to sign a new deal at Manchester United because the Spaniard wants parity with the club’s top earner Alexis Sanchez.
Now, former Manchester United defender Neville has discussed what De Gea needs to rebound from his recent dip.
“De Gea has played too well for Man United for the fans to forget it and put pressure on him,” Neville said during his commentary on Sky Sports.
“The same with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. He knows that he has a player who is fantastic but is going through a difficult time. We’ve all been there. He needs the support of the fans and his team-mates.
“It’s the hardest position on the pitch. Your mistake is normally a fatal one.”
