Gary Neville says he hasn’t seen anything from Manchester United midfielder Fred to suggest the Brazilian merits his £52m price tag.

The South American moved to Manchester United in a big-money deal from Ukrainian side Shakhtar Donetsk under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho.

The Portuguese head coach used Fred sparingly during the opening months of the 2018-19 season before Solskjaer took over the reins from Mourinho back in December.

Fred continued to struggle to make an impact at the 20-time English champions despite the change of management offering a fresh chance to lay a claim to a starting spot.

Solskjaer introduced Fred as a second-half substitute in Manchester United’s 1-1 draw with Arsenal on Monday night.

However, the Brazil international couldn’t inspire a late winner for the hosts.

Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Fred has been unable to live up to his price tag since his move.

Asked if Fred has a future at Manchester United, Neville told Sky Sports: “I’m not sure, I’m not sure.

“I’ve not seen anything of him in the 12 months he’s been here to justify the price tag.

“I think there’s been flashes. I thought he played a really good game away to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League when Manchester United had that wonderful night.

“He looks like he takes the ball, he’s tidy on it. But I don’t see a goalscorer, I don’t see a defensive-midfield player, I don’t see a runner.

“So I’m not quite sure what I see. Essentially for £60m you’d like him to fit into one of those categories.

“The thing is, when you sign someone for £60m you expect them to be really good. They impress you, show you something.”

Manchester United are in tenth place in the Premier League table following a disappointing return of nine points from their opening seven games.

Solskjaer’s men will travel to the Netherlands to take on AZ Alkmaar in the Europa League on Thursday night.

The Red Devils will make the trip to Newcastle United in their next top-flight fixture on Sunday.
