Gary Neville has criticised Manchester United’s signings since the Sir Alex Ferguson era.

The Red Devils have spent a staggering £650m on new players since Manchester United won their 13th and final Premier League title under Sir Alex Ferguson.

Manchester United initially appointed David Moyes as Ferguson’s successor before Louis van Gaal took over the reins in May 2014 following the Scot’s disastrous 11-month spell in charge.

The Dutch coach lasted two seasons before Jose Mourinho took charge of the Red Devils in May 2016 and won the Europa League and the League Cup in his first season.

Manchester United’s starting line-up for their 2-1 win at West Brom contained seven players from the Ferguson era.

Former Red Devils defender Neville isn’t impressed with Manchester United’s spending since their legendary manager called time on his decorated career at Old Trafford.

“If you look at that back five today then they were all there when Sir Alex Ferguson was at the club,” Neville is quoted as saying by the Independent.

“They’ve signed eight defenders in the last four or five years and not one of them is in the team today.

“You’ve got Valencia, Jones, Smalling, Young and De Gea and you obviously have Lingard and Rashford, who were also at the club as well, so seven out of that 11 were there five years ago.

“The recruitment has not been good enough in the previous five years. It’s been disjointed with David Moyes came in, then they flipped upwards towards Louis van Gaal and then backwards with Mourinho in terms of the profile of players.

“It hasn’t been good enough, the recruitment, it’s been all over the place and you can see still quite a lot of the players in that squad have been at the club for a long time.”

Mourinho has signed seven players in two summer transfer windows since the Red Devils appointed the former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager took over the reins at Old Trafford.

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League last term but won two trophies to appease concerned supporters.

The Red Devils qualified for the Champions League thanks to winning the Europa League.
