Gary Neville has claimed that Manchester United would happily sign for a second-placed finish right now.

Manchester United were 2-1 winners at West Bromwich Albion on Sunday thanks to goals from Romelu Lukaku and Jesse Lingard at the Hawthorns Stadium.

The Red Devils are in second place and 11 points adrift of Manchester City in runners-up spot in the table but three points clear of third-placed Chelsea.

Former Manchester United defender Neville admitted that he would be thrilled with a second-placed finish at the end of the 2017-18 season.

Asked if he would take runners-up spot right now, Neville told Sky Sports on Sunday:

“Absolutely. I think at this moment it’s looking unrealistic that anyone’s going to catch Manchester City, so I think second place would be a progression from where the club have been in the last few years.

“You’ve got to remember that there were two or three seasons where they didn’t qualify for the Champions League.”

The Red Devils started the season in impressive style following six victories and one stalemate to keep pace with the Premier League leaders.

Manchester United collected four points from four Premier League games in October following a stalemate with Liverpool FC before losses to Chelsea and Huddersfield Town.

The 20-time English champions managed to steady their title challenge with three successive victories, including a 3-1 triumph over bitter rivals Arsenal at The Emirates.

Jose Mourinho’s men missed out on the chance to reduce Manchester City’s lead following a 2-1 loss to Pep Guardiola’s men at Old Trafford earlier this month.

The Red Devils are 11 points adrift of the current leaders Manchester City in the Premier League table with 20 games to go.
