Gary Neville has warned Jose Mourinho that Manchester United won’t win the Premier League title due to their substandard defence.
The Red Devils slumped to a 3-2 loss to Brighton and Hove Albion on Sunday evening to suffer their first Premier League loss of the campaign.
Manchester United were 2-0 down inside the opening 30 minutes and Romelu Lukaku’s goal proved nothing more than a consolation goal.
Manchester United are already three points behind defending Premier League champions Manchester City in the Premier League title race.
Jose Mourinho was linked with a host of different centre-halves in the summer transfer window but missed out Toby Alderweireld, Yerry Mina and Harry Maguire.
Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof have both struggled since their respective moves to Manchester United.
Former Manchester United defender Neville believes Manchester United’s defence will hamstring their title ambitions.
“Forget everything else, that back four is not good enough to win a Premier League title,” Neville told Sky Sports. “Let’s start and finish with that.
“The goalkeeper is the best in the world, the midfield is strong with Paul Pogba, Nemanja Matic and Fred and up front there is Romelu Lukaku, Anthony Martial, Alexis Sanchez, Marcus Rashford, Jesse Lingard, Juan Mata and a lot of good players.
“But that back four looks like it will always cause problems and always concede goals. It doesn’t have authority and that is a problem.
“Jose Mourinho knows about Premier League title-winning teams and about winning titles in different countries.
“The base and foundation of that is a good defence.”
Manchester United will welcome title rivals Tottenham Hotspur in their next Premier League fixture at Old Trafford on Monday night.
The Red Devils haven’t won the top-flight crown since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of Manchester United.
Mourinho won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in his first season in charge but Manchester United finished without a trophy last term.
