Jamie Carragher says Manchester United can be restored to their former glory if Ole Gunnar Solskjaer continues his overhaul of the Red Devils squad.

Manchester United made a promising start to the new Premier League season with a 4-0 victory over bitter rivals Chelsea FC in their season opener at Old Trafford last weekend.

The Red Devils eased to a resounding victory courtesy of goals from Marcus Rashford, Anthony Martial and Daniel James in their Premier League curtain-raiser.

The 20-time English champions signed James in a £17m deal from Championship side Swansea City in the summer transfer window to add pace to their team in wide position.

Manchester United spent £50m on Crystal Palace full-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka before the Red Devils made Harry Maguire the world’s most expensive defender in a £80m deal.

Former Liverpool FC defender Carragher reckons Manchester United aren’t far away from being Premier League title challengers again.

“I know from being at Liverpool and where we’ve had times outside the top four as a player, I’d always say it’s never as bad as you think,” Carragher told The Last Word podcast.

“Sometimes you just get one player or a couple of players who leave, and something just lights up. I’m not saying that takes you to the title. But I don’t think Manchester United are miles away, I really don’t.

“I think Maguire is a good signing. People questioned the price tag but he had a five-year deal and Leicester knew United were desperate. Is there anyone better out there they could have got? Probably not.

“People say (Matthijs) De Ligt but he was always going to sign for Juventus before United. Could they have brought in a few more in? That’s what the fans are complaining about.

“They spent more than anyone – but I don’t think United are miles away like the way people talk.”

The Red Devils are in second place in the Premier League table behind defending champions Manchester City after the opening round of fixtures.

Manchester United will make the trip to Wolves in their next Premier League fixture on Monday night.

The Red Devils lost successive games at Wolverhampton Wanderers last season in both the Premier League and the FA Cup.
