Jesse Lingard has revealed how his rivalry with Marcus Rashford has played its part in Manchester United’s recent performances.

The Red Devils have been in impressive form since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over the reins of the club from Jose Mourinho in December.

The Manchester United interim manager has won nine of his opening 10 games in charge of the 20-time English champions.

Indeed, their only blip came in a 2-2 draw with Burnley when Manchester United fought from 2-0 down to rescue a point at Old Trafford.

Rashford has scored six goals since the former Manchester United striker became their new manager almost two months ago.

His England team-mate Lingard has contributed three goals and two assists under Solskjaer to help Manchester United remain unbeaten.

Lingard lifted the lid on how the Manchester United pair have been setting each other targets in games.

“Marcus and me have been setting targets for each other, to challenge ourselves,” Lingard told Sky Sports.

“Obviously it’s different aims, maybe in certain games it’s how many shots, or this many touches in a game.

“It’s just different random things, just to make you think and it’s to kind of push each other because you want your friend to be successful as well.”

The England international heaped praise on Solskjaer and his number two Mike Phelan for their impact since taking over the reins at Old Trafford.

“He [Solskjaer] has just brought attacking football back again,” Lingard added.

“You know he’s been there and done that, he’s lived through it, he’s been at Manchester United for years and years, so he knows how a Manchester United team should play.

“He’s lived through all that and experienced it, and Mike Phelan as well – he’s been great since he’s come in.

“He’s made the players realise what it means to be at Manchester United, and to put that shirt on.

“Everything is just clicking at the moment.”

Manchester United are in fifth place in the Premier League table and two points behind fourth-placed Chelsea FC.

The Red Devils will take on Premier League strugglers Fulham at Craven Cottage this weekend.

Manchester United will host Ligue 1 giants Paris Saint-Germain in the first leg of their Champions League round of 16 clash next Tuesday.
