Jesse Lingard has vowed that Manchester United will be ready to take a “stand” next season.

The Red Devils lost 2-0 to Neil Warnock’s relegated Cardiff City side on Sunday at Old Trafford to succumb to a miserable end to the 2018-19 Premier League season.

Manchester United finished the Premier League campaign in sixth spot and 32 points adrift of champions Manchester City.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men managed to win a mere two of their final 12 games in all competitions to squander the chance to secure a top-four finish.

Tottenham Hotspur secured the final Champions League qualification spot with a five-point gap over Manchester United.

The Red Devils have slumped to surprising defeats by Cardiff, Everton and Wolves over the past couple of months, as well as losing to Manchester City and Arsenal.

Lingard is determined that Manchester United will start next season in the right manner as Solskjaer looks to rebuild at Old Trafford.

“It’s disappointing,” Lingard told MUTV. “We’re looking forward to next season, we’ll regroup and come back stronger.

“It’s hard for everyone: fans, staff, players, everyone associated with the club. It’s not where we need to be.

“Manchester United deserves to be at the top and that’s where we need to be. It takes a lot of hard work, dedication and focus.”

Manchester United have failed to finish in the top four on four occasions since Sir Alex Ferguson retired six seasons ago.

The Red Devils suffered a 4-0 aggregate loss to La Liga side FC Barcelona in the Champions League quarter-finals to end their hopes of an unlikely European Cup run.

Manchester United finished the season with a trophy in successive campaigns.
