Man United legend: Why Jose Mourinho won’t last at Old Trafford

Jose Mourinho will eventually lose his job at Manchester United, ex-footballer Andrei Kanchelskis has claimed.

The Portuguese head coach took over reins from his former FC Barcelona boss Louis van Gaal in May 2016 following Mourinho’s disappointing second spell at Chelsea FC.

While Mourinho failed to steer Manchester United into the top four in his opening campaign at Old Trafford, the Red Devils did win the League Cup and the Europa League.

The former Inter Milan and Real Madrid manager led Manchester United to a second-placed finish last term but the Red Devils ended up 19 points adrift of eventual champions Manchester City and didn’t win any silverware.

Manchester United have made a disappointing start to the current campaign and are already well off the pace in the race for a top-four finish, let alone challenging for the Premier League title.

Mourinho’s style of football has earned the Manchester United boss many admirers, often deploying a conservative style of play against their direct rivals.

Former Manchester United star Kanchelskis believes Mourinho is on borrowed time at the 20-time English champions.

“I don’t think Mourinho will ever have the full backing at Manchester United because he doesn’t play the right football – and that is likely what will cost him his job,” Kanchelskis told bWIN.

“He’s known for having a defensive style of football and it’s hard for Utd fans to adapt to that after watching Sir Alex Ferguson’s attacking football for two decades.

“Mourinho is happy to sit on a one-nil result and the games can become boring to watch. He’s not going to change the way he manages so I think that it might be best for him to move on from Manchester United at the end of the season.

“Mourinho needs to step away from the game for a year. He’s taking his rage out on the players, fans and media, which means every move he makes is under scrutiny.

“He’s a great coach and I think after he’s spent some time away from the game, he’ll come back in to his next role stronger and fresher.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to their 13th and final top flight crown of the Scot’s long reign.
