Martin Keown has urged Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho to keep faith with his Red Devils players despite a difficult run of results.

The 20-time English champions remained winless either side of Christmas Day following a 2-2 stalemate with Leicester City last Saturday evening before a 2-2 draw with Burnley on Boxing Day.

Manchester United crashed out of the League Cup at the quarter-final stage after Championship side Bristol City were surprise 2-1 winners against the defending champions in the last eight.

The Red Devils have only secure 24 points from their last 13 games in the Premier League to raise questions about Manchester United’s performances under Mourinho.

The 20-time English champions start New Year’s Eve weekend 15 points adrift of Premier League leaders Manchester City as a first top-flight title since 2013 looks increasingly unlikely.

Manchester United have spent over £260m on new players since Mourinho took over the reins at Old Trafford from Louis van Gaal in May 2016.

The Portuguese coach ended up sharing a fractious relationship with his Chelsea players before his dismissal in December 2015.

Former Arsenal defender Keown urged Mourinho to be patient with the Manchester United squad.

“Now, he seems to be watching from the bench in a disdainful manner,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“At Chelsea, Mourinho lost the players. It is crucial that he does not lose belief in his squad now.”

Mourinho won the League Cup and the Europa League in his first season at Old Trafford.
