Paul Scholes believes Manchester United lack “real class” in Jose Mourinho’s team.

The Red Devils have made a disappointing start to the Premier League season to heap pressure on Mourinho after just eight games in the current campaign.

Manchester United supporters would have anticipated the Red Devils kicking on to launch a title challenge this term after Mourinho’s men finished in second spot last term.

The 20-time English champions did finish 19 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City, but the Devils had the summer transfer window to close the gap.

However, the FA Cup runners up managed to get three signings into the club but reports suggested that Mourinho missed out on some key additions to the Manchester United team.

The Red Devils have toiled in the current Premier League campaign following three losses to leave Manchester United in eighth place in the table and seven points off the pace.

Mourinho does have some world class talents at his disposal but players such as Paul Pogba, Alexis Sanchez and Romelu Lukaku have failed to deliver consistently.

Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes believes the Red Devils are lacking some quality in the team.

“I hate going back and saying ‘when we played, we did this and we did that’ but I look at the current squad of players and I don’t think there’s a lack of quality there,” Scholes told ESPN.

“I do think they miss a couple of real class players that other top teams seem to have.”

When about what positions need improving in Mourinho’s team, Scholes added:

“A link player between the midfield and the forwards.”

Asked by ESPN reporter Andy Mitten whether a player such as Real Madrid’s Luka Modric would fit the ball, Scholes replied:

“Yes, a link player and also a controlling midfield player. They’re different. The link player must have the quality to pass and create.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge at the Old Trafford outfit.

The Red Devils have seen Chelsea FC, Manchester City and Leicester City win the top-flight crown since their last success, while bitter rivals Liverpool FC are now being talked up as genuine title contenders.

Manchester United will take on Serie A title holders Juventus in their next Champions League game at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
