Sky Sports pundit: Jose Mourinho ‘overachieved’ with Man United
Sky Sports pundit Matt Le Tissier claims Jose Mourinho overachieved with Manchester United last term
Jose Mourinho overachieved leading Manchester United to a second-placed finish last season, according to Saints legend Matt Le Tissier.
The Red Devils finished as runners up in the Premier League last season after Manchester United placed above Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC, Chelsea FC and Arsenal.
However, Mourinho’s concluded the campaign a staggering 19 points adrift of Premier League champions Manchester City to highlight the widening gap between the two clubs.
Manchester United have struggled to land some of their top targets in the summer transfer window to raise questions about Mourinho’s future at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils have signed Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred, FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant in the summer transfer window so far.
Former Southampton captain Le Tissier isn’t feeling confident about Manchester United’s prospects ahead of the new Premier League season, adding that the Red Devils overachieved last season.
“I think Mourinho will struggle to get the same tune out of his team as they overachieved with second place considering how they played,” Le Tissier told Sky Sports.
“It was more down to Mourinho’s pragmatism and I’m not sure how much longer the players will put up with it.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson steered the Red Devils to their 13th top flight in his final season in charge.
The 20-time English champions lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final last term to end the season without any silverware.
