Michael Carrick sends message to Man United fans about Jose Mourinho
The Man United assistant manager opens up about his relationship with Red Devils boss Jose Mourinho
Michael Carrick has shed light on his relationship with Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils legend opted to call time on his playing career at the end of the 2017-18 season following 11 campaigns in the Manchester United squad.
Carrick won five Premier League titles, the Champions League, the Europa League, the FA Cup and three League Cups during a decorated career at Old Trafford.
Mourinho brought Carrick into his coaching staff in the summer and the retired England international has helped to fill the void left by the Manchester United manager’s former assistant Rui Faria.
The Red Devils have made a tough start to the Premier League season following a return of 13 points from eight games in the English top flight in the current campaign.
Mourinho has come under pressure due to reported fallouts with club record signing Paul Pogba to fuel speculation surrounding the Portuguese head coach’s long-term future at Old Trafford.
However, Carrick has spoken about his positive relationship with Mourinho having taken up a role on the manager’s coaching staff in the summer.
“He’s been fantastic with me,” Carrick told Sky Sports.
“The situation I’m in at the moment, my first job after being a player so there’s huge element of learning and trying to soak up as much as I can to improve myself. But at the same time I’m there to do a job and there’s a responsibility there.
“He’s been great with me. He’s given me plenty of things to do and at the same time he’s trying to help me develop. I couldn’t have asked any more of him.”
Manchester United looked to be heading for a fourth defeat of the Premier League season when the Red Devils trailed Newcastle United 2-0 after 10 minutes in their last fixture at Old Trafford before the international break.
However, the 20-time English champions responded with goals from Juan Mata, Anthony Martial and Alexis Sanchez to turn the Premier League clash on its head and secure a 3-2 victory over the Magpies at the Theatre of Dreams.
Manchester United have the opportunity to move to within four points of second-placed Chelsea FC at Stamford Bridge on Saturday evening if the Red Devils can end the west London side’s unbeaten start to the season.
Mourinho’s side have failed to secure a win in their last three trips to Stamford Bridge since the Portuguese head coach took over the reins from Louis van Gaal.
