The Manchester United manager refuses to answer a question about their title prospects
Jose Mourinho dodged a question about Manchester United’s title ambitions during their pre-season tour of United States on Tuesday.
The Red Devils ended up in second place in the Premier League table last term to secure their best finish since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013.
The next logical step would appear to be a sustained title challenge but their style of play under Jose Mourinho has often attracted criticism.
Manchester United may have finished in second place ahead of Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool FC and Chelsea, but the Red Devils trailed champions Manchester City by a staggering 19-point margin.
Mourinho signed Brazil international Fred in a £52m deal from Ukrainian Premier League champions Shakhtar Donetsk this summer to improve their options in the middle of the park.
Manchester United have added more depth to their squad with a £17m swoop for FC Porto defender Diogo Dalot and a cut-price £1.5m deal for Stoke City goalkeeper Lee Grant.
Asked whether Manchester United could challenge for the title this season, Mourinho said:
“I don’t answer your question.”
On Manchester United’s transfer business, Mourinho added:
“I don’t have the majority of the players that are going to be in the squad on 9 August when the market [transfer window] closes and we can make it official for the season. So of course I’m not happy, to have just a few players.”
Manchester United lost 1-0 to Chelsea FC in the FA Cup final at Wembley last term after Eden Hazard’s winner from the penalty spot.
