Martin Keown has identified Manchester United’s goalless draw with Liverpool FC as the turning point in the Red Devils’ season.

The 20-time English champions made the short trip to Anfield with Liverpool FC on a poor run of form following one victory in seven games in all competitions.

Indeed, Jurgen Klopp’s defence had been heavily criticised for their poor performances after conceding 12 times following a 5-0 loss to Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Manchester United, on the other hand, had won six of their opening seven games with the only blotch on their record a 2-2 draw with Stoke City at the Britannia Stadium.

The Red Devils adopted a surprisingly negative approach to the Premier League clash as Manchester United showed little attacking invention in a 0-0 stalemate at Anfield.

The 20-time English champions earned 19 points from their opening seven Premier League games, but Manchester United only collected 23 points from their 12 top-flight outings since the north west derby.

Former Arsenal defender Keown suggested that Mourinho’s decision to settle for a point instead of going for a win halted Manchester United’s momentum in the Premier League title race.

“Manchester United’s problems this season stem from their 0-0 draw with Liverpool in October,” Keown told the Daily Mail.

“Then, United were flying. They were a juggernaut at full speed. All of a sudden, Mourinho pulled up the handbrake.

“At that point Liverpool were very vulnerable but Mourinho seemed happy to settle for a draw.

“It meant that in the next game, against Huddersfield, the United players were confused and lost 2-1.

“Some of what Mourinho says is petulant and there is a danger that the players can become a reflection of their manager.”

The Red Devils are 15 points adrift of runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.
