Luke Shaw has credited Paul Pogba with helping the Manchester United defender to improve at Old Trafford.
The 23-year-old secured a place in Manchester United’s starting line up for their opening fixture of the 2018-19 Premier League season.
Shaw has been working hard in pre-season to get in top shape after the England star was criticised about his weight last term.
The former Southampton defender sealed Manchester United’s 2-1 win over Leicester City at Old Trafford with a late goal to scoop the man of the match award.
Shaw will be hoping to build on a positive start to the Premier League campaign after contending with heavy criticism over the past couple of seasons at Old Trafford.
Indeed, his manager Jose Mourinho ha regularly criticised the £27m signing for his uninspiring performances on the pitch and his attitude behind the scenes.
Shaw, though, paid credit to World Cup winner Pogba for helping the Manchester United defender to improve at the 20-time English champions.
“For me, he’s helped me a lot – we’ve spoken a bit,“ Shaw told Man United’s website. ”He’s a wonderful guy and an even better player on the pitch. Honestly, he’s so important for us. Like I said, he’s only been here for three or four days and to put in a performance like that was unbelievable.“
Shaw moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window.
However, the England star suffered a horror leg break in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in September 2015.
