Gary Neville: What I really think about 23-year-old Man United star

The Man United legend urges Luke Shaw to get his mentality right at Old Trafford

Gary Neville believes Luke Shaw is a very talented but has urged the Manchester United full-back to get his mentality right.

The England international has failed to nail down a spot in the Manchester United team since his move to the Red Devils in a £27m seal from Southampton in the 2014 summer transfer window.

Shaw suffered a double leg break at the start of the 2015-16 season to curtail his impressive form and sidelined the full-back for almost 12 months at Old Trafford.

The 23-year-old has struggled to impress Portuguese head coach Jose Mourinho, who hasn’t been afraid to criticise the England international in the British media.

Mourinho has often taken issue with Shaw’s performances on the pitch and even in training, while the defender’s fitness has been a talking point during his spell at Old Trafford.

Shaw produced a man of the match performance in Manchester United’s 2-1 win against Leicester City at Old Trafford on Friday night.

And former Manchester United defender Neville delivered his honest verdict on Shaw.

Neville told Sky Sports: “We’ve seen quite a lot of these young English players – there’s been quite a few at Arsenal if you think of Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Theo Walcott, Kieran Gibbs, Jack Wilshere and Ross Barkley is another – where the talent is there, the potential is there and it’s whether they can mature and become a real player.

“Those questions are still being asked about Luke Shaw. I have no doubt over his talent or potential having worked with him, he’s a special left-back when he’s fit, on form and confident.

“However, Manchester United’s a tough place to play. You’ve got to be there every single minute of every single day – not game – and you’ve got to have the right mentality.”

Manchester United signed Shaw in a £27m deal from Southampton in 2014 during Van Gaal’s stint in charge at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils have brought in Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the summer transfer window.
