Danny Higginbotham has urged Marcus Rashford to remain at Manchester United.

The England international has struggled to hold down a regular starting spot in the Manchester United team since Jose Mourinho took over the reins in May 2016.

Rashford has managed to get a lot of minutes under his belt under Mourinho, but the 21-year-old has not yet been given a sustained run in the starting XI.

Rashford, who tends to start on the centre-forward and the wing in the Manchester United team, has been linked with a potential move away from Old Trafford.

Remarkably, European giants Juventus and Real Madrid have both been linked with a potential swoop to sign the promising England centre-forward.

Former Manchester United defender Higginbotham believes Rashford needs to remain at the 20-time English champions to continue his development.

“Marcus Rashford came onto the scene at a young age and he has been unbelievable since,” Higginbotham told talkSPORT.

“A lot of people are now saying he needs to move because he needs to be playing more, but I think they forget that he’s still only 21.

“A lot of people have also said, ‘well he’s got to leave the club because it’s affecting his international career’, but he’s just equalled a 52-year record – he’s made 16 England appearances in a calendar year which is the joint most.

“People said when Zlatan Ibrahimovic was there it was bad for Rashford, but I thought that was great for Rashford because he is still learning.

“I think at times we forget his age because he started so young at Manchester United and we all think he’s older than he actually is.

“I think he’s in the best place at the moment.

“He’s contracted until 2020, and I just think he needs to see where the land lies over the next season or so.”

Rashford broke into the Manchester United team under Louis van Gaal, scoring eight goals in 18 games in the 2015-16 season to earn rave reviews.

He put pen to paper on a new deal with Manchester United in May 2016 after the Red Devils rewarded the England star for his excellent form.

The England star was in and out of the Manchester United starting line up under Mourinho in 2016-17 and 2017-18, managing to find the net 24 times in 105 games in all competitions.
