Marouane Fellaini is adamant that Manchester United aren’t that far behind Manchester City.

The Red Devils suffered a comprehensive 3-1 loss to the defending Premier League champions in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium before the international break.

Manchester City are sitting at the top of the Premier League table and 12 points ahead of Jose Mourinho’s side to underline the widening gap between the two teams.

The Citizens won the Premier League title in the 2017-18 season after Manchester City finished 19 points ahead of Manchester United.

The Red Devils have already lost four times in the Premier League in the current campaign to heap pressure on Jose Mourinho and his squad.

Manchester United haven’t been able to challenge for the title since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement and even the appointment of the Portuguese head coach hasn’t prompted a sharp upturn in fortunes.

Asked whether the Red Devils are far behind Manchester City, Fellaini told Sky Sports, as quoted by the Daily Express:

“I don’t think so.

“I remember when I arrived in England [in 2008] it was a top four, now it is a top six, so every year it is more difficult.”

Manchester United managed to go on a five-game unbeaten run to start to make some progress in the Premier League, thanks in part to Anthony Martial’s form.

However, the Red Devils saw their momentum come to a shuddering halt after a 3-1 loss to Pep Guardiola’s men.

Manchester United will welcome Roy Hodgson’s Crystal Palace at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.
