Former Man United striker Michael Owen doesn't expect the Red Devils to finish in the top four this season
Michael Owen is tipping Manchester United to finish in fifth place in a “season of consolidation” at Old Trafford.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is set to embark on his first full season in charge of Manchester United following his appointment back in December.
The Red Devils ended up in sixth spot in the top-flight table after Manchester United stumbled across the finishing line.
Solskjaer has signed Swansea City midfielder Daniel James and Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka in deals worth a combined £68m.
Manchester United are also widely reported to have completed a deal for Harry Maguire, although the club are yet to officially confirm the transfer.
The Red Devils are still being linked with a swoop for Sporting Lisbon midfielder Bruno Fernandes and Juventus striker Paulo Dybala.
Former Manchester United striker Owen doesn’t anticipate the Red Devils breaking back into the top four despite strengthening this summer.
“United will be desperate to add at least a couple of new big-name signings to their squad between now and the end of the transfer window with Harry Maguire looking more and more likely to join Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s United revolution by Thursday week,” Owen told BetVictor.
“Romelu Lukaku is surplus to requirements at Old Trafford, but the club will want to sign another striker if – as seems increasingly likely – the Belgian international gets his move to Italy. A season of consolidation at Old Trafford.”
Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson got his hands on the top-flight crown for the final time his 25-year career.
The Red Devils appointed Solskjaer as their permanent manager at the end of March after the Norwegian coach had been brought in as Jose Mourinho’s temporary replacement in December.
Manchester United have only managed to finish in the top four twice in the past six seasons.
