Jamie Carragher has questioned why Jose Mourinho didn’t try to nurture Kevin De Bruyne during the pair’s time together at Chelsea.

The Belgium international is the leading contender to win the PFA player of the year award following his attacking midfielder’s impressive start to the 2017-18 Premier League season.

De Bruyne has scored six times and has made nine assists in 20 games in the English top flight to help Manchester City build a 15-point lead at the top of the Premier League.

The Belgian attacking midfielder started his Premier League career at Chelsea but De Bruyne struggled to break into the Blues team under Mourinho.

Indeed, the Portuguese coach sanctioned De Bruyne’s sale to Wolfsburg where he established himself as one of the Bundesliga’s best players following 10 goals and 20 assists.

Manchester City signed De Bruyne in a £52m deal from Wolfsburg in the 2015 summer transfer window 12 months ahead of Pep Guardiola’s arrival at The Etihad.

Former Liverpool defender Carragher questioned Mourinho’s decision to discard De Bruyne despite his obvious potential.

“I have heard all the arguments about how De Bruyne – just like Mo Salah – was not so developed at Chelsea during the Mourinho era, and Chelsea did not suffer given they won the title twice in three years after selling him,” Carragher told the Daily Telegraph.

“But would other managers have discarded such a talent, or would they have found a way to nurture it in the long-term interests of the club? It is hard to believe Guardiola would have managed De Bruyne on a daily basis at a young age and not seen what he might become.”

Mourinho has earned a reputation for not developing young talent during his managerial career at FC Porto, Chelsea, Inter Milan and Real Madrid before he took over the reins at Manchester United.
