Graeme Le Saux has criticised Jose Mourinho’s failure to improve Luke Shaw at Manchester United.

The England international moved to Manchester United in a £27m deal from Southampton under Louis van Gaal in the 2014 summer transfer window.

Shaw made a slow start to his Old Trafford before he earned rave reviews for his performances in the opening months of the 2015-16 season.

However, the 22-year-old suffered a double fracture of his right leg in a 2-1 loss to Dutch side PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League group stage.

Under Van Gaal’s successor Jose Mourinho, Shaw has struggled to make his mark at Old Trafford much to the frustration of his Portuguese manager.

The Red Devils boss hasn’t been afraid to openly criticise the former Southampton defender in the British media to raise questions about Shaw’s future.

Mourinho slammed Shaw’s performance in the FA Cup last weekend after he substituted the Manchester United left-back at half-time of their 2-0 win over Brighton in the last-eight clash.

“I believe it’s not just a manager’s job to win games and trophies but also to improve players and he clearly hasn’t done that with Shaw,” Le Saux told Betfair, as quoted by Metro.

“Shaw was at United before Mourinho, but since the manager’s arrival, not only has Shaw not got better, he’s lost confidence and has that fear of making mistakes that comes when you feel under immense pressure.

“The fact he’s not getting backed up by his manager only makes it harder. It’s not motivating Shaw and it also puts fear into other players who are worried it will be them next week.

“It doesn’t create an environment for players to perform well in and it’s really high risk tactics from Mourinho.”

Manchester United are in second place in the Premier League table and two points above Liverpool FC in the race to secure a Champions League spot.

The Red Devils won the Europa League and the League Cup last term.
