Jose Mourinho urged to support struggling Man United stars
The Arsenal legend Martin Keown sends advice to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho
Martin Keown has urged Jose Mourinho to support struggling Manchester United stars such as Victor Lindelof.
The Red Devils suffered a surprise 3-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Monday to continue their poor start to the season.
Manchester United struggled defensively as Lindelof and Chris Smalling were exposed in the middle of the defence.
Mourinho signed Lindelof in a £30m deal from Portuguese giants Benfica in the 2017 summer transfer window.
Lindelof struggled to adapt to the rigours of the Premier League in his first season at the 20-time English champions.
The Manchester United star started their opening three Premier League games of the 2018-19 campaign.
Lindelof struggled badly in their 3-2 loss to Brighton alongside Eric Bailly at the Amex Stadium before their heavy defeat by Spurs.
The Sweden international’s confidence has been clearly rocked following his difficult start to life at Old Trafford.
Former Arsenal star Keown believes Mourinho has to place more faith in his struggling Manchester United stars.
“Mourinho has to give that same level of support to his players,” Keown told the Daily Mail.
“When Victor Lindelof hit that backpass from which Tottenham almost scored, you could see his manager spinning away in disdain on the touchline.
“Going forwards, Mourinho has to fight the temptation to do that when his players make mistakes.
“He needs to ignore the media. He doesn’t need to keep reminding us about what he has won. It is as if he is pointing to his past successes to prove that he is not the problem.”
Manchester United secured their best finish since the Sir Alex Ferguson after the Red Devils finished in second spot in the Premier League last term.
The Red Devils signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the summer transfer window.
