Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants the Red Devils to embrace the Europa League next term
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has challenged Manchester United to use their participation in the Europa League as a positive next season.
The Red Devils secured their Europa League fate on Sunday after Manchester United were held to a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town at the John Smith’s Stadium.
Manchester United missed out on the chance to move to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham after Isaac Mbenza cancelled out Scott McTominay’s first-half goal.
The 20-time English champions lost 4-0 to FC Barcelona over two legs in the Champions League quarter-final to end their hopes of winning the competition against the odds.
As a result, Manchester United will play in the Europa League next term as Solskjaer looks to start his rebuilding job at Old Trafford in earnest.
Arsenal and Chelsea FC have both reached the Europa League semi-finals this season, presenting the prospect of an all-Premier League final.
Speaking at his post-match media conference, Solskjaer is hoping Manchester United can use the Europa League as a positive next term.
“You can sometimes use the Europa League as something positive, as Chelsea and Arsenal have done this year, as we did a couple of years ago when we won the Europa League,” Solskjaer told his post-match media conference.
“I am an optimist by nature and I will make the most of it. The kids will get chances to play games, that’s for sure. We’ll have to make something positive out of it, no matter what.”
Manchester United won the Europa League in 2017 when the Red Devils beat Ajax 2-0 in the final under Solskjaer’s predecessor Jose Mourinho.
The Red Devils will take on relegated Cardiff City in their final Premier League fixture of a disappointing season on Sunday afternoon.
