Steve Nicol has tipped Manchester United to sack Ole Gunnar Solskjaer by Christmas if the Red Devils are not close to the top four.

The Red Devils boss is approaching his first full season in charge of Manchester United ahead of their Premier League opener against Chelsea FC on 11 August.

Solskjaer was initially appointed as Jose Mourinho’s interim replacement in December before the Norwegian head coach got the role on a permanent basis at the end of March.

The Manchester United manager has signed Swansea City midfielder Daniel James and Crystal Palace defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka in the summer transfer window so far.

Although the Red Devils have recruited some promising talents, Manchester United have not landed any marquee signings to have an immediate impact on the team.

The Red Devils will be looking to improve upon their sixth-placed finish last term as Solskjaer looks to secure their return to the Champions League in his first full season in charge.

And former Liverpool FC defender Nicol believes that Solskjaer is unlikely to last past Christmas at Old Trafford as the Norwegian head coach pays the price for Manchester United’s transfer failings.

“I would say there are three managers who are in danger,” Nicol told ESPN FC, as quoted by the Daily Express.

“I think the obvious one is Chris Wilder at Sheffield United.

“Teams that come up, as soon as they realise they’re in big trouble the first thing they do is change the manger.

“The other one I think could be in trouble is Silva at Everton.

“If he starts the season the way he did last year, he might not last.

“But the one I’m going to go for is because they’ve done pretty much nothing so far in the transfer market – Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

“He’s got nothing to work with right now but he’s still got the expectation to live up to.

“If, come Christmas, Manchester United are that far out of the top four, I don’t expect them to be in the top four, then Ole Gunnar Solskjaer could be in trouble.”

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013, when Sir Alex Ferguson was still in charge of the Old Trafford outfit.

The Red Devils haven’t won any silverware in the last two seasons.
