Frank Lampard has claimed Manchester United record signing Paul Pogba doesn’t score enough goals to start in a number 10 role.

The France international’s best position has been a source of debate over the past couple of months following his inconsistent performances.

Pogba scored two goals and made two assists in his opening four Premier League games before a hamstring problem kept the Frenchman sidelined for two months.

The 24-year-old has been used as part of a two-man midfield alongside summer signing Nemanja Matic in recent months.

Pogba was criticised for showing a lack of defensive responsibility in Manchester United’s losses at Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur over the past month.

The French star was one of Juventus’ most creative players during four seasons in Turin before his £89m return to Manchester United in 2016.

Pogba netted 34 times in 178 games in all competitions for the Serie A giants, while the Manchester United record signing has only scored 12 goals in 74 outings for the Old Trafford side.

Chelsea FC’s record goal-scorer Lampard doesn’t believe Pogba gets on the score sheet enough to justify starting in a number 10 role.

“I don’t think he’s a No.10,” Lampard told the Evening Standard. “He doesn’t have the goal tally to play there or to be given a free role – that has gone in the modern game.”

Lampard added: “He is still relatively young and can be that top all-round player. But I feel he will never be the midfielder to get 20 goals a season regularly so he has to adapt his game going forward and become more complete.”

Lampard netted 211 goals in 648 games in all competitions during his Chelsea FC career.
