Gary Neville was critical of Phil Jones in Manchester United’s 3-3 draw with Sheffield United at Bramall Lane on Sunday afternoon.

The 27-year-old was named in Manchester United’s starting XI for the first time in the Premier League this season for the trip to the promoted side.

Jones hadn’t started a competitive fixture since a 1-0 win over Partizan Belgrade in the Europa League a month ago.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer started Jones as part of a back three alongside Harry Maguire and Victor Lindelof.

However, Jones’ lack of first-team football was horribly exposed in the first half when he was caught out by a long ball in the lead-up to John Fleck’s goal.

The England international failed to clear a long pass before Lys Mousset bundled Jones off the ball to tee up Fleck for Sheffield United’s opening goal.

Former Manchester United defender Neville slammed Jones’ performance in light of his horrific defending for Fleck’s opener.

“If ever a goal had been coming… the warning signs were there. [Harry] Maguire and Jones, they can’t handle the running of Mousset and [David] McGoldrick in behind them,” Neville told Sky Sports.

“It’s agricultural, it’s a channel ball, the easiest ball in the world for a centre-back to deal with and Phil Jones doesn’t deal with it.

“Sheffield United get their just rewards. There’s a little bit of good fortune at the end.

“Jones just has a look over his shoulder and in that moment he loses control of the duel and Sheffield United, look at them – four of them in the box! Mousset gets his reward for following in.”

Mousset doubled the home side’s lead before Manchester United scored three times in seven minutes to turn the game on its head thanks to goals from Brandon Williams, Mason Greenwood and Marcus Rashford.

However, Olivier McBurnie netted a 90th-minute equaliser for the hosts to rescue a point for the promoted team.
