Andy Townsend has urged Manchester United star Paul Pogba to replicate the playing style of Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard.
The 24-year-old’s performances have attracted criticism in recent months for his ineffective performances in the middle of the park.
Pogba has been used as part of midfielder paid but the Frenchman struggled alongside summer signing Nemanja Matic.
Indeed, Jose Mourinho prematurely substituted Pogba during Manchester United’s losses at Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur.
Pogba’s inability to protect his back four has been scrutinised, while the record signing has looked rather blunted going forward.
The France international has scored two goals and has made nine assists in 17 appearances in the Premier League this term.
Ex-Blue Townsend challenged Pogba to adopt a role similar to Liverpool FC legend Gerrard and Chelsea FC record goal-scorer Lampard.
“I wouldn’t play him as a number 10 because he can do so much from behind the game with the ball at his feet,” Townsend told BBC Radio 5 Live.
“I would have one midfielder sitting. I would have him next to Matic, who is sitting. Let him play like an old school Gerrard or Lampard. Let him do a bit of everything.”
Manchester United signed Pogba in a club record £89m deal from Serie A giants Juventus in the 2016 summer transfer window.
Pogba moved to Juventus in 2012 in an £800,000 deal due to a lack of first-team opportunities under Sir Alex Ferguson.
