Jose Mourinho has attempted to shed light on his decision to strip Paul Pogba of the Manchester United vice captaincy.

The Red Devils have endured a week of controversy centered around the working relationship between Mourinho and Pogba.

Manchester United drew 1-1 with promoted side Wolverhampton Wanderers at Old Trafford last weekend to drop more points in the title race.

Pogba was critical of Manchester United’s tactics in the stalemate in the wake of the disappointing home performance.

Mourinho saw it fit to demote Pogba from his leadership role ahead of their Carabao Cup third round clash.

To compound Mourinho’s misery, Manchester United suffered a 8-7 penalty shootout loss to Championship side Derby County in the League Cup at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Pogba has been linked with a potential move away from Manchester United amid the ongoing scrutiny surrounding his relationship with the Portuguese head coach.

Speaking at his pre-match media conference ahead of Manchester United’s trip to West Ham United on Saturday afternoon, Mourinho attempted to provide clarity about his decision to strip Pogba of the vice captaincy.

“I explained in detail to the people who have to know, which is the squad and especially Paul,” Mourinho said. “Myself and my coaching staff decided to do that and I always analyse a player as a player.

“When a player is a captain, I analyse the player by the player’s perspective, but also by the captain’s perspective. And after weeks of analysing and changing opinions with my coaching staff, we had the decision that from now Paul is just a player and not a captain.

“So decision made. I informed obviously the player and the other players and then when I was asked, before the match on Tuesday, I confirmed.

“Now I confirm again and end of the story.”

Manchester United finished in second place in the Premier League table after the Red Devils finished 19 points adrift of leaders Manchester City last term.
