Rio Ferdinand described Juventus’ 1-0 win over Manchester United as “men against boys” in the Champions League on Tuesday night.

The Red Devils were looking to make an immediate return to winning ways in the Champions League following a 0-0 stalemate with Valencia last time out.

However, Manchester United conceded a first-half goal after Cristiano Ronaldo’s cross was deflected into Paulo Dybala’s path and the Argentina international broke the deadlock.

The Red Devils rallied in the second half and France international Paul Pogba hit the woodwork in the second half but Manchester United couldn’t conjure an equaliser.

Manchester United have only beaten the group’s whipping boys Young Boys this term after a 3-0 victory over the Swiss side in their opening fixture last month.

The Red Devils have managed to win one of their last seven games in all competitions to ensure Jose Mourinho remains under pressure at the 20-time English champions.

Former Manchester United defender Ferdinand wasn’t impressed with the Red Devils’ weak performance against the Serie A champions at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.

“If you were having to describe this game short and sharp it’s men against boys,” Ferdinand told BT Sport. “There was a huge difference between the sides on quality on the ball they were bossed today [on Tuesday night].”

Manchester United haven’t won the Champions League title since 2008 when Sir Alex Ferguson led the Red Devils to a penalty shootout victory over Chelsea FC in the Moscow final.

Ferdinand was part of the Manchester United team that lifted the European Cup before the retired England international featured for the Red Devils in the 2009 and 2011 Champions League final losses.

The 20-time English champions secured their best finish in the Premier League since Ferguson’s retirement last term when Mourinho led Manchester United to a second-placed finish.

The Red Devils will make the trip to Turin in their next Champions League fixture looking to replicate their successes in 1999 and 2003 during the Ferguson era.

Manchester United signed Fred, Diogo Dalot and Lee Grant in the 2018 summer transfer window.
