Paul Scholes highlights Man United striker’s progress
The Manchester United legend is encouraged by the progress of Romelu Lukaku at Old Trafford over past few weeks
Paul Scholes has admitted that he has been impressed with Romelu Lukaku’s improvement at Manchester United in recent weeks.
The Belgium international moved to Manchester United in a £75m deal from Premier League rivals Everton in the summer transfer window.
Lukaku’s switch was met with some skepticism over his ability to shine in high-profile games for Manchester United.
The 24-year-old hit the ground running with an impressive return of 10 goals in his opening nine games before Lukaku’s form evaporated.
Lukaku faced criticism after he failed to find the net against Arsenal, Chelsea FC, Liverpool FC, Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur in the opening half of the season.
However, the Belgian forward ended that run with a goal and an assist in a 2-1 win over Chelsea FC at Old Trafford last month.
Former Manchester United midfielder Scholes heaped praise on Lukaku for his steady improvement over the past month or so.
“He’s had a great year,” Scholes told BT Sport.
“Obviously the question about him was could he do it in the big games but in the last couple of weeks he’s started to do that better.
“He scored against Chelsea and was better against Liverpool. For his first season as a young centre-forward at a big club, he’s done really well.”
Lukaku has netted seven times and has made three assists in his last 10 games in all competitions.
The Red Devils will take on Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup semi-final at Wembley following a 2-0 win over Brighton and Hove Albion at Old Trafford last weekend.
Manchester United signed Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal in the January transfer window.
