Jose Mourinho says Scott McTominay will “always be his boy” after giving the Manchester United midfielder his chance to shine at Old Trafford.

The Portuguese head coach has been often criticised for his failure to bring through young prospects at his previous clubs Inter Milan, Real Madrid and Chelsea FC.

Mourinho faced the same accusation at the 20-time English champions, especially as Anthony Martial and Luke Shaw appeared to struggle under his management.

However. the 56-year-old handed McTominay his debut against Arsenal from the bench before the Scotlnd international started against Crystal Palace in May 2017.

McTominay was a regular in the Manchester United matchday squad throughout the 2017-18 and 2018-19 seasons, amassing 45 appearances in all competitions over the past 24 months.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has now inherited McTominay in the Manchester United squad after the Norwegian head coach replaced Mourinho at Old Trafford back in December.

However, Mourinho insists he will continue to have a big soft spot for McTominay after giving the promising midfielder the chance to shine at Manchester United.

“I think he’s more than ready [to perform for Scotland],” Mourinho told Sky Sports News.

“First of all, he feels his country deeply, I know that.

“And second you have an accumulation of experience during all these years.

“Assistant manager in top clubs, first-team manager in many others.

“Now the last couple of years in Scotland, I think this challenge comes in the right moment for him.

“And I just hope that my boy can help him because Scott McTominay will always be my boy.”

McTominay scored his first goal for Manchester United in a 2-1 loss to Wolves in April 2019 before he found the net in a 1-1 draw with Huddersfield Town towards the end of the season.

The Red Devils finished in sixth spot in the Premier League table.
