David May names 24-year-old as Man United’s best defender
The Man United legend talks up Victor Lindelof's performances in the Red Devils team this season
David May believes Victor Lindelof has “matured” into Manchester United’s best defender this season.
The Sweden international has been a regular in the Manchester United starting XI in the current campaign under both Jose Mourinho and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Lindelof has started 17 games in the Premier League to provide some consistency at the back in a difficult campaign for the Manchester United defence so far.
Solskjaer’s predecessor Mourinho was responsible for bringing Lindelof to Manchester United in a £30m deal from Portuguese side Benfica in the 2017 summer transfer window.
Lindelof started a mere 13 games in the Premier League and made a further four substitute appearances in what was a slow start to his Old Trafford career.
Some of his performance due criticism of Manchester United’s decision to spend substantial transfer fee on the 24-year-old centre-half.
However, the Swedish star has been much improved this season and has outshone Eric Bailly, Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling.
Former Manchester United defender May described Lindelof as the club’s best defender following his impressive form in the current campaign.
“This season Victor has matured and now I’d say he is Man United’s best centre-half,” said May, speaking exclusively to 888sport.
“Phil Jones too has a great chance to establish himself as one of Ole’s first choice pairing. Especially now that Bailly is out for three games after his stupidity at getting sent off when we were 4-1 up – what’s going through his mind there.
“I still think Bailly can be very naïve at times. So it’s Jones or Smalling to partner Victor Lindelof for me.”
Manchester United have won five successive games in all competitions since Solskjaer took over the reins from Mourinho last month.
The Red Devils will face Spurs in the Premier League on Sunday evening.
