Charlie Nicholas is backing Liverpool FC to secure a 1-1 draw with Manchester United at Old Trafford in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

The Merseyside outfit will be looking to record a fourth successive Premier League win and keep pressure on Manchester United in second spot.

The Reds are two points behind Jose Mourinho’s side in the race to finish as runners up behind runaway Premier League leaders Manchester City.

Liverpool FC were held to a goalless draw with Manchester United at Anfield earlier this season after Mourinho adopted a conservative approach on Merseyside.

Both clubs are comfortably ahead of fifth-placed Chelsea in the Premier League table which means a draw would be a reasonable outcome for Liverpool FC and Manchester United.

Former Arsenal midfielder Nicholas believes Mourinho will set out his Manchester United team to blunt Liverpool FC’s impressive attack at Old Trafford.

“Will Jose open up? No he will not,” Nicholas told Sky Sports.

“He will look at the league table and think if they can keep Liverpool behind them, with the problems Chelsea and Arsenal have, then they get second place. If the game becomes open then Liverpool will win and Jose knows that, and doesn’t like it.”

Nicholas added: “United are also confused because Alexis Sanchez, who seems to think he is still at Arsenal with the way he is playing, is losing the ball far too often and it has hurt their fluency. I think Mourinho will play to stifle the Liverpool front three and play for a draw.

“I thought it was strange playing Firmino in midweek as he looks tired now and while he might start nice and sharp, I think his impact will have lessened. Therefore the longer the game goes on the more it suits United.”

Liverpool FC booked their place in the Champions League quarter-finals on Tuesday night after a 5-0 aggregate win against FC Porto.

Manchester United will host La Liga giants Sevilla in the second leg of their last-16 clash at Old Trafford next Tuesday.

The Red Devils were 2-1 winners against Chelsea FC at Old Trafford earlier this month.
