Jamie Carragher has warned Jose Mourinho that his Manchester United team are unlikely to be able to win the Premier League title this season if they play like they did against Liverpool in the big games.

The Red Devils produced a strong defensive performance against Jurgen Klopp’s side at Anfield on Saturday as they held the Reds to a goalless draw on Merseyside.

The result kept Manchester United very much in the hunt for the title this season, with the Red Devils currently second in the table and two points behind leaders Manchester City after eight games.

However, former Liverpool star Carragher believes that Manchester United are unlikely to be able to sustain a Premier League title challenge if they play like they did against Liverpool in the other big games this season.

Speaking on Sky Sports’ Monday Night Football, Carragher said: “Jose Mourinho has always been lauded – and rightly so – as the man for the big occasion, the man in a big game, a ‘Mourinho masterclass’ winning these games.

“His way, of late, is not working. I go back to when Peter Schmeichel was winning titles with Manchester United and they possibly had six big games – Liverpool home and away, Arsenal home and away and someone else challenging, whether it was Chelsea or Newcastle.

“I won’t criticise him for the way he played at Anfield because you can still win a game playing like that – but if those results continue I think it will be very difficult to win the title.”

Manchester United are currently preparing to return to Champions League action with a trip to Portugal to take on Benfica on Wednesday night.

The Red Devils will then focus on Premier League affairs and a trip to newly-promoted Huddersfield on Saturday afternoon as they look to get back to winning ways in the top flight and get their title challenge back on track.
