New Man United signing sends message to Chelsea fans
Romelu Lukaku explains his decision to sign for Manchester United despite being linked with Chelsea for much of the summer
Romelu Lukaku has insisted that he did not think twice about signing for Manchester United despite Chelsea’s interest in landing the striker this summer.
Lukaku was heavily linked with a move to Stamford Bridge throughout the summer but it was Manchester United who ended up landing the Belgian forward over the weekend as the Red Devils agreed a fee with Everton for the 24-year-old.
The transfer has come as something of a surprise for many because Chelsea looked set to re-sign the forward for most of the summer before Manchester United ramped up their interest last week.
However, the player himself insists that he did not think twice above moving to Old Trafford as soon as he learned about Manchester United’s interest in signing him.
Speaking in an interview with ESPN, Lukaku said: “This is an opportunity that I’ve always wanted since I was a child. When [Manchester United] came calling, I didn’t have to think twice. So I’m really delighted to hopefully be part of their history.”
He added: “My mind was already set. I gave my word, and I don’t look back. I didn’t look back since, and I was already mentally preparing to be part of the team.”
Lukaku has now linked up with his new team-mates in Los Angeles as the Red Devils prepare for the new Premier League season with a tour of the United States.
Manchester United are gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season after the Red Devils won the Europa League last term.
