Manchester United are pressing ahead with contract negotiations with David De Gea amid “fears” that the goalkeeper could leave at the end of the season, according to reports in the British media.

The Evening Standard is reporting that Manchester United are growing increasingly concerned about the 28-year-old’s situation at the club.

De Gea’s current contract is set to expire at the end of the season, but the Red Devils have the option to trigger an extension for a further year.

However, if the goalkeeper doesn’t commit to a new contract, Manchester United could be left feeling that they should cash in this summer rather than risk losing De Gea for nothing in 2020.

The same report says that talks between the two parties are ongoing, but De Gea’s reluctance to sign a new deal is more due to his own ambitions than any financial incentives.

The story also claims that both sides thought that they were close to agreeing a new contract as long ago as June, but the deal has so far failed to materialise.

De Gea, who is widely regarded as one of the world’s top goalkeepers, has won one Premier League title since his arrival at Old Trafford back in 2011.

The Red Devils look like they are already out of the title race this season after they fell 12 points behind leaders Manchester City in the wake of their 3-1 defeat at The Etihad on Sunday.
