Marouane Fellaini has been ruled out for a “couple of weeks” with a knee injury suffered while on international duty with Belgium.

The 29-year-old midfielder started Belgium’s World Cup qualifier against Bosnia and Herzegovina on Saturday but was forced off in the 29th minute of the match with an apparent knee problem.

It had been feared that Fellaini had suffered a serious ligament problem, but the Belgian FA confirmed on social media over the weekend that the midfielder had simply strained his medial collateral ligament.

The Belgian FA wrote on Twitter: “Fellaini is out for a couple of weeks and #BELCYP. Scan on left knee injury (MCL sprain). Get well soon Marouane ! #RoadtoRussia.”

Despite the injury not being too serious, Fellaini will now miss Manchester United’s crunch clash against bitter local rivals Liverpool at Anfield on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils head into the game looking to continue their fine start to the new Premier League season, with Jose Mourinho’s men currently second in the table and level on points with leaders Manchester City.

Fellaini proved his worth to Manchester United before the international break by scoring twice during their 4-0 victory over Crystal Palace at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are aiming to win the Premier League title this season for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson’s final campaign in charge in 2013.
