Rio Ferdinand opens up about Romelu Lukaku after Man United’s loss to Man City
Rio Ferdinand reacts to Romelu Lukaku's display for Man United against Man City

Rio Ferdinand has defended Romelu Lukaku following the Belgian forward’s disappointing display in Manchester United’s 2-1 loss to Manchester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
The striker was criticised for his disappointing display for the Red Devils on Sunday as Manchester United slumped to a defeat by their bitter local rivals.
Lukaku was at fault for Manchester City’s second goal after he failed to clear his lines, and the 24-year-old then missed a late chance to net an equaliser for the hosts.
However, former Manchester United defender Ferdinand felt that Lukaku’s job was made very difficult on Sunday because of the way the Red Devils approached the game.
Writing on Twitter after the result, ex-defender Ferdinand said: “Not a good day for Rom [Lukaku]….involved in 2 goals conceded n misses a chance he should score….the way Utd played 2day makes it hard for any Striker up there.
“Needs runners closer to him to see any joy.. #MCFC suffocated #mufc today.. put into a sleeper hold from minute 1!!”
Lukaku will be hoping to help Manchester United return to winning ways on Wednesday night when the Red Devils host Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils’ loss to the leaders left them 11 points behind Pep Guardiola’s men after just 16 games of the new season.
Manchester United, who finished in sixth place under Jose Mourinho last term, have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
