Frank Lampard has backed Manchester United’s signing of Alexis Sanchez from Arsenal and says that the Chilean can bring the “magic” back to Old Trafford.

The Chile international signed for the Red Devils last week after he was included in part of the deal which saw Henrikh Mkhitaryan head to Arsenal.

Sanchez made his Premier League debut for Jose Mourinho’s team on Wednesday night but it ended up being a game to forget after the Red Devils were throughly outplayed and beaten 2-0 by Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley.

The 29-year-old will be hoping to help Mourinho’s men return to winning ways in the top flight when they host Huddersfield Town in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon.

And former Chelsea star Lampard feels that the signing of Sanchez could help the Red Devils reach the next level under Mourinho next season.

Speaking to BT Sport on Wednesday night, former midfielder Lampard said: “It [the signing of Sanchez] ups the standard.

“Whether it’s a technically gifted player like Sanchez or a disciplinarian who gets people working around him, you feel it in training.

“Alexis Sanchez looks like he might bring that little bit of magic like Eric Cantona did. He can do so many things with the ball, he’ll lift everyone.”

Wednesday’s loss to Spurs left Manchester United in second place in the Premier League table and 15 points behind leaders Manchester City.

The Red Devils will now have to turn to the FA Cup and the Champions League as their remaining realistic hopes of silverware this season.
