Gary Neville has admitted that he was “mystified” to see Manchester United lose 2-1 to Crystal Palace at the weekend, but he has called on the Red Devils to remain patient.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men suffered a surprise defeat in front of their home fans on Saturday afternoon as the Red Devils slumped to their first Premier League loss of the campaign.

Manchester United have taken four points from their opening three Premier League games to leave them in fifth place in the Premier League table.

Solskjaer has been tasked with steering Manchester United back into the top four this season after they finished sixth and without a trophy last term.

Former Manchester United defender Neville has admitted that he was surprised by the defeat by says that he feels that the the Red Devils simply need to remain patient and trust in the philosophy that’s in place at Old Trafford.

Speaking in an interview with Sky Sports, Neville said: “I think United are going to have moments like that in this period, there is going to be pain and there are going to be defeats that you can’t quite explain.

“Beating Chelsea emphatically on the first day, playing well at Wolves and could’ve won the game.

“Then all of a sudden, you’re up against Crystal Palace and you lose at home – it’s quite mystifying.

“They’re the type of results you get when you’re trying to develop and change and transition out of one culture to another.

“All Man United have to do is remain patient and stick to what they’re doing.”

Manchester United will this week dust themselves down as they prepare for their Premier League clash against Southampton away from home on Saturday afternoon.

The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since their final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
