Gary Neville believes that it is only a matter of time before Manchester United make an official announcement about the future of Wayne Rooney at the club.
The striker’s situation at Old Trafford has been a relentless source of speculation in recent months due to his lack of playing time at Manchester United last season.
Indeed, Rooney only started 15 Premier League games last season and it has been suggested that he could leave Manchester United in search of regular playing time next season.
Former Red Devils defender Neville admits that he has been surprised that Manchester United have not made an announcement about Rooney’s future yet this summer.
And Neville is expecting the England captain’s future to be sorted out imminently.
Neville told ITV Sport: “I thought there would have been a statement around Wayne Rooney’s future already. I thought it would have been organised pretty quickly at the end of the season to stop this void, this speculation.
“I would imagine it is going to happen quickly. They are going to have to announce it in terms of whether they are going to keep him next season or whether he is going to move somewhere else.
“Sometimes these moves, if he is going to move, take time, and sometimes the player himself would need to reflect upon the fact that it is a big decision to leave such a huge club and whether he wants to do that.
“Like I said, I am surprised it hasn’t been dealt with already.”
Manchester United are believed to be on the lookout for at least one new striker this summer, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic having been released at the end of his contract and Rooney’s future still unclear.
The Red Devils are preparing themselves for a return to the Champions League next season.
