Ex-Tottenham midfielder Jermaine Jenas insists that the future looks bleak for Jose Mourinho at Manchester United after a shocking start to the season.

The summer transfer window turned out to be a disappointing one for Jose Mourinho as he only managed to bring in Fred from Shakhtar Donetsk, Lee Grant from Stoke City and Diogo Dalot from FC Porto.

The Manchester United boss made no secret of his desire to bring in reinforcements at centre-back, as the club reportedly approached Harry Maguire, Jerome Boateng, Diego Godin and Toby Alderwiereld over potential moves in the last few months.

However, no further signings were made and when the transfer window shut, Mourinho’s demeanour plummetted even further. He stated that the club was in for a difficult start to the new Premier League campaign and so it has proved.

Defeats against Brighton and Tottenham have left Manchester United languishing in mid-table, already six points behind their title rivals.

According to BBC pundit Jenas, Mourinho is solely to blame for the current plight at Old Trafford and he suggests that the team’s fortunes are unlikely to improve under his leadership.

As per The Daily Mail, he told reporters: “I’ve watched Mourinho for years and I’ve never seen him bring back a team from the sort of position that he’s in now.

“The same thing happened at Madrid and at Chelsea — this is history repeating itself. Think about it — he’s got four central defenders who he has absolutely got no confidence in, he admitted himself that he doesn’t know his best back four so when those players go out there they are already at sixes and sevens.

“He’s not got any of his real backroom staff around him — they’ve gone. He probably feels isolated and lonely. He’s at loggerheads with Woodward in terms of his recruitment, the players aren’t playing for him and the fans aren’t singing for him.”

Manchester United will play against Watford at Vicarage Road on Saturday, who have won all of their games at the start of the season.

Supporters will be demanding three points for Mourinho’s men but defeat could see the 55-year-old coach forced closer to the exit door as his third year at the helm threatens to descend into chaos.
