Jose Mourinho accused of ‘destroying’ Man United star
Matt Le Tissier discusses Luke Shaw's situation at Manchester United under Jose Mourinho this season
Matt Le Tissier has accused Jose Mourinho of “destroying” Luke Shaw with his treatment of the Manchester United star this season.
The left-back has struggled to hold down a regular spot in the first team at Old Trafford under Mourinho this season and he has been in and out of the starting line-up.
Shaw seemingly has yet to win the trust of the Red Devils manager, and his latest humiliation came when he was substituted at half-time during Manchester United’s 2-0 FA Cup win over Brighton and Hove Albion at the weekend.
The 22-year-old has been limited to just six Premier League starts so far this season and he will be hoping to hold down a regular spot in the first team between now and the end of the season.
However, former Southampton star Le Tissier has not been particularly impressed by the way Mourinho has been handling Shaw at Old Trafford this season.
Speaking to Sky Sports, Le Tissier said: “I think if Mourinho is still there then it is inevitable Shaw will leave this summer. I have no idea what he is trying to achieve.
“There is just a really strange relationship going on there and I don’t understand what he’s doing because he’s just destroying the player at the moment.
“I’m not sure if it was anything to do with him choosing Manchester United over Chelsea despite being a Chelsea fan when Mourinho was manager at the time.
“You also don’t know what happens at training or how he lives his life to give an accurate assessment but, while there are players that this sort of approach can work with, I just don’t think Shaw is one of them.”
Manchester United will return to Premier League action after the international break when they take on Swansea City at Old Trafford on 31 March.
The Red Devils are currently in second place in the table as they bid to try and qualify for next season’s Champions League.
