Jose Mourinho discusses Manchester United's title hopes after the damaging 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Sunday
Jose Mourinho has insisted that Manchester United will not give up hope of winning the Premier League title this season, despite their 2-1 loss to Manchester City on Sunday.
The Red Devils were beaten by their bitter local rivals in front of their home fans following goals from David Silva and Nicolas Otamendi at Old Trafford.
The result moved Manchester City 11 points clear at the top of the Premier League table after just 16 games of the new campaign, with Pep Guardiola’s men the heavy favourites to win the title.
It remains to be seen whether Manchester United will be able to catch Manchester City in the race for the title as the hectic festive period looms large.
However, Red Devils boss Mourinho refused to rule his side out of the running for the title despite the damaging defeat on Sunday afternoon.
Speaking to Sky Sports after the game, Mourinho said: “I don’t know [if the title race is over] but they [Manchester City] are a very good team.
“They are lucky; they have good decisions in their favour, but Tuesday is another day of the Premier League and I am sure all of us – Chelsea third and the others in fourth, fifth, sixth – I’m sure that everyone is going to fight for points and fight to reduce the distance, which is a normal thing in the fight for the championship.
“But of course, City’s [11-point] advantage is a very good one.”
He continued: “It is a significant distance. I don’t know [if we can make up the points difference]. I know we can win on Wednesday [against Bournemouth]. Win, lose or draw, I know we can win on Wednesday and we are going to work and fight for it.
“That’s the only thing I say, match after match. And every match is a match where we are going to give everything with our qualities, with our problems – that is what we do all the time.”
Manchester United will now dust themselves down and try to get back to winning ways in the Premier League when they host Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Wednesday night.
The Red Devils have not won the Premier League title since their famous final triumph under Sir Alex Ferguson back in 2013.
