Jurgen Klopp sends message to Jose Mourinho after Man United sacking
The Liverpool FC manager issues his support for Jose Mourinho after his Manchester United sacking
Jurgen Klopp has reiterated that Jose Mourinho remains an “outstanding manager” despite his sacking at Manchester United on Tuesday.
The Red Devils opted to part company with the 55-year-old after Mourinho was appointed as Louis van Gaal’s replacement in May 2016.
Manchester United slumped to their fifth league defeat of the season at Anfield on Sunday evening to cast further doubt on Mourinho’s future.
Goals from Sadio Mane and Xherdan Shaqiri sealed a 3-1 win over a subdued Manchester United side as Premier League leaders Liverpool FC moved 19 points ahead of their bitter rivals.
While a title challenge is out of the question in the current campaign, Mourinho leaves Manchester United in sixth spot and 11 points adrift of the top four.
Mourinho managed to avoid losing to Klopp in their four meetings in the Premier League before Sunday evening’s 3-1 loss to the 18-time English champions.
The duo have a rivarly that goes back to Klopp’s spell in charge of Borussia Dortmund when the German team beat Real Madrid in the Champions League semi-finals in 2013.
Speaking at his media conference on Tuesday about Mourinho’s exit, Klopp issued his backing for the Portuguese manager:
“He is a very competitive guy, very ambitious. He has all my respect, [he has been] unbelievably successful.
“I can imagine the last few months especially were not a joy for anybody, especially him. It is not nice to face all these questions every day. That is a problem.
“But nobody can take away all the things he has won. Nothing can take that away. I hope, personally, he has that in his mind when he leaves and not a few other things that happened in the last few months.
“He is an outstanding manager.”
Manchester United won the Europa League and the League Cup under Mourinho following his appointment in May 2016.
