The Liverpool legend talks up Anthony Martial's potential at Manchester United
Graeme Souness believes Anthony Martial has the talent to become a world-class player for Manchester United.
The France international has endured a difficult 16 months or so since Jose Mourinho took over from Louis van Gaal at Old Trafford.
The Dutch coach signed the forward in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2015 summer transfer window as Martial became the most-expensive teenager in the world.
The 21-year-old scored 11 times in 49 games in all competitions during his first season at Old Trafford but Martial fell out-of-favour under Mourinho last term.
The French striker scored 14 goals in 28 starts and 12 substitute appearances in all competitions as he contributed to Manchester United’s success in the League Cup and the Europa League.
Martial has made a brilliant start to the 2017-18 Premier League season despite being used as an impact substitute after coming off the bench and scoring four goals.
Indeed, the former Monaco star netted an 81st-minute winner in Manchester United’s 1-0 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon.
Former Liverpool midfielder Souness talked up Martial’s potential at Old Trafford after his important contributions this season.
“He is only a baby. He got 17 goals in his first year,” Souness told Sky Sports.
“We were expecting too much. It is the biggest club in Britain. One of the biggest clubs in the world. He has everything he needs to be a top, top player.”
Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.
