Gary Neville: Man United star is so talented, he could tear the league apart
The Man United legend talks up Anthony Martial's talent following his cameo performance in Saturday's 1-0 win against Tottenham
Gary Neville has told Manchester United that Anthony Martial has the ability to “tear the Premier League apart”.
The France international has been used largely as an impact substitute in the Premier League this season as Jose Mourinho continues to place his faith in English forward Marcus Rashford.
Martial was a 70th-minute substitute in Manchester United’s home clash against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon as the Red Devils boss turned to the Frenchman to unlock Spurs’ defence.
The 21-year-old managed to latch onto Romelu Lukaku’s header before the forward managed to outwit two Tottenham defenders and slot a finish past Tottenham goalkeeper Hugo Lloris.
Martial has now netted four goals from the bench in the Premier League this season to develop something of a reputation as a super substitute.
Former Manchester United defender Neville talked up Martial’s quality following the striker’s brilliant finish to secure three points against Tottenham at White Hart Lane.
“It’s been a stop-start Manchester United career for Martial,” Neville told Sky Sports.
“For someone of his talent, he should be tearing this league apart with his ability. He’s lost his place in the France squad – there’s obviously something wrong with him.
“You always get the feeling he’s playing at 85 per cent. If he showed that extra 15 per cent, then he could do anything. He’s got everything you’d want: composure in front of goal, great skill, pace, strength, but what is that little bit missing?”
Manchester United signed Martial in a £36m deal from Ligue 1 side AS Monaco in the 2016 summer transfer window under Mourinho’s predecessor Louis van Gaal.
Martial has scored 31 goals in 101 appearances in all competitions during his three seasons at Old Trafford so far.
