Jose Mourinho has a different way of looking at Manchester United’s games than their title rivals, Mark Lawrenson has claimed.

The Red Devils were criticised for a goalless draw with Liverpool at Anfield last weekend as Manchester United showed a lack of adventure at their bitter rivals.

Manchester City are two points clear of their neighbours after Manchester United dropped points on Merseyside but remained unbeaten in eight games.

However, Huddersfield Town became the first Premier League team to beat Manchester United this season with a 2-1 victory over the Red Devils on Saturday.

Mourinho has developed a reputation for using conservative tactics against their biggest title rivals over the past season or so on the road in the Premier League.

Manchester United haven’t won the Premier League title since 2013 when Sir Alex Ferguson signed off on his decorated reign in style.

Former Liverpool defender Lawrenson believes the Manchester United manager has a unique viewpoint when it comes to big games against their closest rivals.

“He has a different way of looking at these big games and it’s make sure we don’t get beat,” Lawrenson told BBC Radio 5 Live.

“Whatever happens, he doesn’t want to be beaten.”

Manchester United finished in sixth place in the Premier League table last term.

The Red Devils won the EFL Cup and the Europa League in Jose Mourinho’s first season in charge.
