Ex-striker explains why Lukaku snubbed Chelsea to sign for Man United
Romelu Lukaku opted for a move to Manchester United ahead of Chelsea because he wanted a change, says Dion Dublin
Romelu Lukaku may have rejected Chelsea because he wanted a “change” this summer, according to former striker Dion Dublin.
The Belgian forward signed a long-term contract with Manchester United on Monday after the Red Devils agreed a £75m deal with Everton for the forward.
Chelsea had been heavily linked with a bid to bring Lukaku back to the club throughout the summer but Manchester United ended up winning the race for his signature when they agreed a deal with Everton last weekend.
Mourinho was the manager who opted to sell Lukaku to Everton when in charge of Chelsea back in 2014.
But Dublin reckons that the 24-year-old forward clearly felt like a change rather than heading back to his former club.
Speaking on talkSPORT on Wednesday, Dublin said: “Maybe he wanted a change. I was there for a while and you didn’t want me then.
“Mourinho must have seen a difference in him, a change in him. I don’t think Mourinho is stupid enough to say “I’ve had him before; I’m not going to have him again.”
Lukaku has been training with his new Manchester United team-mates in Los Angeles this week as he gets used to life with his new club.
The Red Devils are gearing up for a return to the Champions League next season after they won the Europa League in Mourinho’s first campaign at the club.
